Student Speak - Year 2

Learning Landscape Wednesday, 28 Aug 2024

The Year 2s are full steam ahead with their PBL unit, which focuses on investigating the impact of push and pull forces on land, air and sea objects! This unit supports students to engage in the Design Thinking Model to prototype their very own balloon-powered vehicles! To further develop their knowledge of forces, the Year 2s embarked on an excursion to the Rail Museum to see how they are present in everyday life! Let’s hear from some of our students about their highlights and learnings so far:

‘In PBL we have been learning about push and pull forces. Push is when you move something away from you and pull is when you move something towards you. On the excursion I liked when we got to push a button and it pushed air up into a plastic box and made a ball float on top of it.’ Emily

‘I like PBL at school and how we have been doing different pushing and pulling activities with the playdoh. On the excursion I liked the science activities. My favourite was when you had to push little handles and it made the wheels roll forward on the tracks.’ Lucy

‘In PBL, we have been learning about push and pull. When you pull something it comes towards you and when you push it, it goes away from you. On the excursion I liked pretend playing on the train and also making a train, tracks and a bridge for the train to go down. We were learning about how things push forwards automatically without even touching it!’ Sammy

‘The excursion was fun when we got to pretend to drive a train. We learnt about push and pull and we liked the activity where you got to sit in the chair and pull a rope to lift yourself up!’ Elsie and Addi

‘On the excursion I liked hopping on the train and pretending to test drive it. There is a part in the train that you push or pull and it makes the train go forwards or stop.’ Isaac

‘On the excursion I learned that there are different types of trains that hold different things like coal, animals or carriages for people. We did some push and pull activities and I liked the one where you sit on a seat and hold a rope. I liked that when you pull yourself up you go higher!’ Ivy
